Flushing Your Hot Water Tank

Flushing your hot water tank is an essential maintenance task that helps to remove sediment buildup, which can accumulate over time and affect the efficiency and lifespan of your water heater. Here's a general guide on how to flush your hot water tank:

1. Turn Off Power: If you have an electric water heater, switch off the power to the unit at the circuit breaker. For gas water heaters, set the gas control knob to the pilot position.

2. Turn Off Water Supply: Locate the cold water supply valve connected to your water heater and shut it off. This valve is typically located above the water heater on the cold water inlet pipe.

3. Drain the Tank: Connect a garden hose to the drain valve located at the bottom of the water heater. Make sure the other end of the hose is directed to a drain or outside where the hot water won't cause damage. Open a hot water tap in your home to allow air into the system, which will help the tank drain faster. Then, open the drain valve on the water heater and let the tank drain completely.

4. Flush the Tank: Once the tank is drained, close the drain valve and turn the cold water supply back on. Allow the water to run into the tank for a few minutes to help flush out any remaining sediment. Then, repeat the draining process until the water runs clear.

5. Close Drain Valve and Refill Tank: Close the drain valve once the water runs clear, and disconnect the garden hose. Turn off the hot water tap you opened earlier. Open a hot water tap in your home to allow air to escape as the tank refills. Once the tank is full, close the tap.

6. Restore Power or Gas: If you turned off the power or gas earlier, restore it to the water heater.

7. Check for Leaks: Inspect the area around the drain valve and connections for any signs of leaks.

8. Repeat Regularly: It's recommended to flush your hot water tank at least once a year to prevent sediment buildup and maintain optimal performance.

Remember to consult your water heater's manual for specific instructions and safety precautions, as procedures may vary depending on the type and model of your water heater. If you're uncomfortable performing these tasks yourself, consider contacting us at 613 883-7860.
